Day 143 (22 AUG, YEAR 1): Used Car Purchase

You have purchased a used Honda CIVIC TYPE R (EK) '97.
Paint Color: Vogue Silver Metallic

The lowest mileage CTR (EK) is the '98 model, which appears during Week 86. Since the EP model doesn't qualify for the 90's Challenge, and since I didn't want to wait that long to buy this car, I planned on buying and using the '97.

This car costs $12986, has 22164.5 miles, and is found in the Used Car II lot. I'll be using this car for the Honda CIVIC and TYPE R OMRs, and the Japan 90's Challenge. I might use it for the Japanese Championship. I'll use this one, then I'll buy and collect the same one during Week 121.
...

It's time to race!! There are no other tasks until day 169, when two more Used Cars become available (the Silvia and the Vitz). I have some test runs to do before I finally decide on which of the Championship Events I'll be entering. I also have some work to do for the website. I'll update with more as best as I can...

Here's what my Game Status screen looks like after this car was delivered:

Day 142 (21 AUG, YEAR 1): Prize Car Delivery

Prize car Ford Model T Tourer '15 has been delivered.
Paint Color: Black Japan Enamel

This is one of the "slowest" vehicles in the game. There are some people crazier than me who tried to run it around The Ring, but I don't have that kind of patience... especially for something that won't help complete the game. It's not available for use in races, and won't be used to complete this gamesave.

Ahhh... The last of the License Tests, and this one's a good one. Being a License Test, there's no wallriding nor lawnmowing. But by the time I got around to this test, I'd driven this course so many times it's not necessary for gold anyway. This car drives similarly to the SLR McLaren, although the gearing allows for much better control of the acceleration out of turns. The back end for this car can swing nicely, so I try to use the oversteer in certain spots to help make turns.

Again, with as many corners as this course has, It'd be impractical to give ALL the details, so I'll just highlight some significant moments during the run...

For some reason, the video gets choppy from T5 to T7. When I have time, I'll upload a smoother video, but it will take a while before I have time to re-capture it.

S: Launch @ 10000 (at limit)
T1: 0'47.247
I nearly cut too much corner for the first part of Flugplatz, but not enough for a DQ.
T2: 1'20.758
I'm wide for the exit of Adenaur-Forst, and I have to slow down quite a bit to keep from going off. I should be deeper into 3rd gear for the exit, but I had to kick it down to 2nd to keep it on track.
T3: 1'48.797
T4: 2'37.630
T5: 3'15.326
T6: 3'42.327
My braking into Karussel is a little late, and I'm over the banked portion. I feel like I should be using more of it to help keep a higher speed through the turn, but I'm not sure how much of a difference it would've made.
T7: 4'31.767
I'm a little too far to the right as I head into Wippermann, and I have to slow down more than usual to make sure I don't go off to the right for the entry, and/or to the left on the exit. I'm too deep into the corner for my liking when I finally pull through Eiskurve. I should be tighter to the inside curb, to allow for a straighter line out of it.
T8: 5'12.689
I nearly send all 4 wheels over the right side for the entry into Pflanzgarten I, but no DQ...
T9: 5'33.652
While entering Galgenkopf, I hit the right side curb and it kicks me wide to the left. It gets me off-rhythm, and I nearly go into the left side grass. I have to lift to make sure that doesn't happen, but at least I'm left with a good angle for the exit onto the straight...
T10: 6'14.851
T11: 6'38.856
I'm a little too hot heading into the final right hander. It takes me longer than usual to get back to full throttle for the final short distance to the finish line...

This track offers many opportunities to cut corners, as the pavement that extends beyond the curbing is driveable without penalty. Using the grassy portions when doing so is ok, but I definitely want to avoid the sand traps, as they really slow the car down.

S: Rolling
I begin braking for the first of the Dunlop curves just before the blue/yellow curbing on the right starts to go off-screen. I brake from 189 to 80 as I roll over the left side curb, then get back to full throttle as I pass it, still steering to the left. When I hit the right side curb, I lift and swing the steering to the right before getting back to full throttle. For the left-right that leads into T1, I finally swing the wheel to the left as I brake, taking speeds from 163 to 92, easing back into the gas as I approach the left side curb.
T1: 0'30.402
Braking for Tetre Rouge begins as I pass by the 100 m marker on the left, slowing from 161 to 109, getting back to full throttle as I roll over the right side curb. I cut the corner with my right side on the grass, but not enough for a DQ. I try to keep a smooth line for the exit to get the most speed for the first of the long straights. I begin braking for the first chicane at about the 150 m mark, from 227 to 91, as I roll over the right side curb. I swing the steering to the left as I brake slightly, slowing to the mid 80s as I hit the left curb, then get back to full throttle after rolling off of it.
T2: 1'03.309
Braking for the second chicane begins just before I pass the 100 m marker. I slow from 227 to 100, and flutter the throttle as I cut over the left side curbing. I brake for the right hand portion as I come off of it, slowing further to 91, and get back to full throttle as I roll over the right side curb. I try to keep as straight of a line as possible.
T3: 1'29.519
I begin braking for Mulsanne as the blue/yellow curbing goes off screen to the right, slowing from 215 to 56, getting back to full throttle after turning for the sharp right hander. I'm apparently too early for doing so, and I put the left side slightly into the dirt on the exit.
T4: 1'51.642
I brake for the right kink that leads into Indy as I pass the 100 m marker on the left, slowing from 224 to 183, and I briefly gas it as I come off of the right side curb. I try to stay to the right to prepare for Indy, and begin braking as the car straightens out. I slow down from 180 to 65, and get back on the gas as I roll over the left side curb.
T5: 2'19.426
When the curbing on the left ends and the dirt begins, I brake for Arnage, slowing from 139 to 46, and get back to full throttle as I'm about to roll over the right side curb. From there, it's flat-out until I approach the entry to the Porsche Curves. Just as I pass the 100 m marker, I begin braking from 219 to 125, and ease back into the gas as I roll over the right side curbing. I swing the steering to the left and lift slightly as I roll over the left side curb.
T6: 2'48.207
There's a lamp post on the right, and once it goes off screen I begin braking for the right hander, slowing from 162 to 108. I get back on the gas as I try to keep a tight line to the right, to help set up the left hander that leads to the final stretch. Just after swinging the steering to the left, I give the brakes a stab to go from 128 to 113, then get back to full throttle for the final straight. I begin braking for the first of the chicanes as I pass the Pit Lane entry, slowing down from 194 to 73. I keep it tight to the right for the exit, to set up the final left-right, braking again from 106 to 67, and head for the line at full throttle after passing the left side curb.

Another test where wallriding was used, but even with that, it took me a while to pass it. There are some places where wallriding will get you in trouble, as it leads to exit speeds much faster than normal, and care must be taken not to hit the next wall that comes up.

Generally, for the icy pavement, I try to stay in the middle of the track, as the snowy edges make it too easy to lose traction through the turns. Also, whenever I feel like I'm going to hit a wall, I try to swing the back end out to lessen the chance of a DQ. Other than that, I won't spend much time discussing this illegitimate run, and I'll let the replay speak for itself...

Another fun run on a real-world track, and in a great car. Unfortunately, I forgot to set the replay to "in-cabin" mode until about 0'20.000 into the lap, but I'll do the best I can to describe that part of the run anyway.

S: Rolling
I begin braking for Turn 2 as I approach the left side curbing, slowing from 149 to 73, and get back on the gas as I pass the inside curb. As the track widens to the right, I begin braking for Turn 3, slowing from 140 to 125, then get back on the gas as I roll over the left side curb. I brake for Turn 3a as I come off of it, slowing from 117 to 90 and ease back into the gas as I chunk the inside curb.
T1: 0'16.925
As I pass the end of the left side rumblestrip, I begin braking for Turn 4, taking speeds from 117 to 50, then get back to full throttle as I start to pass the right side curbing. I begin braking for the looping left of Turn 6 at the top of the hill, from 152 to 84, then get back to full throttle for the rest of the turn. I lift as I shift from 3rd to 4th, to help maintain the grip as I push through for the exit. I begin braking for the double-right at Turn 7 as the track darkens, slowing from 172 to 58, and flutter the throttle to bring the car around the second part of the turn. It's flat-out from there to Turn 8a...
T2: 0'50.322
I start to understeer toward the right while coming out of Turn 8, and as I'm about to roll over the right side curb, I swing the steering to the right and stab the brakes to go from 154 to 138, then get back to full throttle for the exit. Braking for Turn 10 begins when the Dodge banner along the left wall begins to go off screen, and I slow down from 178 to 140 while heading for the inside curb on the right. I get back to full throttle as I roll over it, and head for the final hairpin. I begin braking about 25 m before the cones appear on the left, slowing from 175 to 45, and my turn-in for the hairpin is too sharp and/or too early. I nudge the wall as I try to curl around, then get back to full throttle from there to the finish..

Another great car/track combo, and I wish I could explain why it took me so long to finally get a gold run. This car can take many of the turns at high speeds, and I found myself using the brake a lot less than for other cars, despite travelling at a faster pace.

S: Rolling
Turn-in for the first right hander begins as I cross the white line painted on the ground, and I brake as I begin to roll over the inside curb. I take speeds down from 167 to 98, then briefly get back on the gas before braking for the second part of the turn. I slow down from 103 to the low 70s, then get back on the gas to complete the turn. For the first part of the Esses, I simply lift as I approach the left side curb, and when I start to understeer into the right hander, I brake and swing the steering to the right. I slow down from 115 to 73, and stay to the right on the exit. I brake for the next left as I begin to roll over the inside curb from 105 to 88, and brake briefly as I swing the steering to the right. I take speeds down from 99 to 85, and flutter the throttle from there to stay to the right for the approach into Dunlop. I lift as I swing the steering back to the left again, and finally get back to full throttle. I brake for the Degner kink as I pass the 50 m marker, from 143 to 115, then coast over the right side curb before I get back on the gas. I nearly go into the junk on the outside, but manage to avoid the DQ. However, since I'd lose control by braking with 2 wheels off track, I take a later braking point and have to go deeper into the sharp right hander than usual. I slow down from 106 to 53, then get back to full throttle to push through the rest of the turn.
T1: 0'51.546
Shortly after passing the rumblestrip on the right, I begin braking for the Hairpin, taking speeds from 127 to 48, and coast around half of the corner before getting back to full throttle. I keep it tight to the right as I come around 200R, and I finally start braking for Spoon a bit after passing the paved footpath on the right. I slow from 154 to 85, getting back to full throttle as I head for the curbing on the outside. After it goes off screen, I brake for the second part of it, slowing from 103 to 67, and then it's back to full throttle for the ascent up the hill.
T2: 1'33.312
For the left hander after T2, I give a quick stab of the brakes as I turn in, and try to maintain the 150s as I roll over the inside curb. I make my way back to the left side of the track as smoothly as I can after exiting, and begin braking for Casio about 25 m in front of the KONAMI banner. I slow down from 158 to 45, still braking as I'm nearly over the right side curb. I get back to full throttle briefly, then I lift and swing the steering to the left for the exit. I'm back to full throttle as I approach the left side curb, and it's flat-out from there to the line...

This track is a fun one to drive. It has lots of turns, and many of them lead into another. I'm not much of a straight-line-speed kinda guy. I'd very much prefer driving an underpowered car that handles well than a high-powered pig. But, with that said, each car/track presents its own challenges.

I guess this is the first time I've mentioned it, but it's probably not the first time you've noticed... There are darkened portions of the pavement (for non-off-road races) where the track is "rubbered-in". I haven't done any testing to actually see if the traction improves when driving over these portions of the track, but regardless, these marks usually indicate a good line to take.

S: Launch @ 5500
For the first few turns, I aim for the inside curbs to keep my line as straight as possible. I make my way to the right side of Rivoli to prepare for the left hander of Turn 3, and begin braking as I pass under the 50 m marker. I slow down from 93 to 60, then ease back into the gas as I roll over the inside curb.
T1: 0'20.460
For the first part of Turn 4 at Vendome, I begin braking shortly as I pass under the 50 m marker, slowing from 86 to 53, and ease into the gas as I pass the left side curb. I lift as I roll over the right side curbing, to keep the car tight to the right, and get back to full throttle to complete the final right-left portion. I gradually make my way to the left side of la Paix, and begin braking shortly after passing under the 50 m marker. I slow down from 95 to 68, coast by the right side curb, then brake again down to the mid 30s in 2nd gear as I pass the left side curb for the exit. As I approach the shadows that stick out onto the track, I begin braking for the hairpin at Opera, taking speeds down to 30 before I get back to full throttle in 2nd to complete the turn. I lift briefly as I swing the steering to the right, and make my way onto Madeleine.
T2: 0'55.117
I brake slightly for Turn 6 just as I'm about to go under the Firestone banner, and get back to full throttle as I pass the inside curb, taking the turn in the low 90s. With better steering, higher speeds can be held. As I come out of the shadows past the 100 m marker, I begin braking for Turn 7, slowing from 110 to 46, and flutter the throttle as I make my way along the inside curbing on the right. I brake for the hard left as the yellow Bosch banner goes off screen to the right, taking speeds back down to the mid 30s as I get back on the gas when I pass the left side curb. I brake for the left of Turn 9 lightly and try to hold the mid 40s. I'm at full throttle as I go through the right hander, and I finally swing the steering back to the left as I slide toward the inside curb of Turn 10. I brake slightly and flutter the throttle as I come around the left turn, trying to maintain the low 50s through it. I complete the turn and head for the line from there.

While I never did any wall riding for this test, I hit the walls a number of times. In fact, after looking at the replay again, I don't know how I avoided being DQ'd. Unfortunately, the track map provided doesn't indicate any turn numbers, and there are a heck of a lot of them. Since this was such a bad run, I won't spend much time describing it...

S: Launch @ 6500
As I'm about to enter the A11 section, I'm too close to the inside. I bang into the right side wall, and continue. At around 1'00.000, I try to drive off of the cliff, but the barrier saves me. I also bang into the inside barrier again, just before entering the turn that leads to T1.

Looking at the # of attempts and time spent on License Tests S7 to S16, I wondered why it took me so long to gold these tests. Then I noticed that I did all of these from 10pm to 4am... not my finest hours for performance. Of these tests, only S11 took me less than 15 attempts, and less than 18 minutes. I'm just glad they're over with, for now...

S: Rolling
As the Armco ends along the right hand side, I begin braking for Turn 2, slowing from 139 to 79. I'm along the inside (left side) curbing as I begin to coast into the turn. I ease back into the trottle in the mid 60s, finally sticking at full throttle about 3/4 through the turn. Approching the entry to Turn 4, I begin braking as the yellow banner on the far left wall is just about to go off screen. I brake from 126 to 79, coast over the first right side curb, then get back on the gas and finish the right-left portion.
T1: 0'31.658
Exiting the tunnel, I swing the steering to the left and lift briefly to get the disposition right. When I reach the top of the hill, I give a stab of the brakes to go from 103 to 88, and get back on the gas as I roll by the right side curb of Turn 6. Just as I pass the tree shadows along the left side, I ease off the gas and get back to full throttle after making sure I won't get into the right side wall. I begin braking for Turn 8 when the MOTUL banner along the right goes completely off screen, slowing from 136 to 45. My angle for the turn-in is poor, and I end up deeper and wider than I usually prefer. I bring the car around, and prepare for the double-left of Turn 9. I swing the steering to the left, then I ease off the gas as I roll over the inside curb. When I start to roll over the inside curb of the second left, I get back to full throttle, trying to keep a line that keeps me on the right. As I pass some tree shadows, I lift and turn-in for the left kink of Turn 10.
T2: 1'09.253
When I pass the first of the tree shadows after T2, I begin braking for Turn 11, going from 119 to 52, then get back on the gas to push through the rest of the turn. I keep a line that puts me on the left side, for a better approach into Turn 12. Using the tree shadows again, I brake from 100 to 67, and ease into the gas to make sure I'm tight to the right. Unfortunately, I'm pointed too far to the right, and I roll over too much of the high right side curb. This kicks me back to the left a bit, and some speed is lost. I try to stay to the left for the entry into the right-left of Turn 13, and I lift after swinging the steering to the right. When I come off of the right side curb, I flutter the throttle as I make my way around the left hander. I'm back to full throttle as the tree shadows from the right go past, and it's a dash to the line from there...

I don't think I'll ever get sick of this car. It's too bad this is the last time I'll be driving it for this gamesave...

S: Rolling
Braking for Turn 1 begins as I pass under the 100 m marker, and I take speeds down from 160 to 68. I begin turn in about 60 m beyond it, and get back on the gas as the right side curb approaches.
T1: 0'13.979
I scoot over to ther right side to prepare for Turn 2, braking as I start to pass the beginning of the rumblestrip. I take the speed down from 127 to 90, and get back to full throttle as the left inside curb passes by. I'm flat out well into Turn 4, and I don't start braking until after I come off of the right-side rumblestrip. I slow from 144 to 103, and I slightly nudge the left wall as I bring the car around. After passing the 50 m marker, I brake into Turn 5, slowing from 138 to 97, and ease back into the gas as the exit opens up. I'm pretty sure the Akasaka turns (Turn 6) can be taken flat out, but I lift slightly to make sure I don't lose control.
T2: 0'51.320
I begin braking for Turn 7 when the red Firestone banner passes overhead (just past the 100 m marker), slowing from 156 to 97, and I get back on the gas as the right side curb goes by. I'm flat out until I approach Turn 9, then I start braking as the last of the Mobil banners along the right goes off screen. I slow from 153 to 105, and get back on it for the approach to the final turn. I brake as I pass under the 50 m marker, from 130 to 60, and go back to full throttle for the final stretch...

The default gearing for this car is very wide. I don't think I spent more than 4 seconds in 4th gear, along the back straight. Most of the circuit is taken in 3rd, and this seems to be one of many cars that benefit from early shifting, but I'm not certain of that yet...

S: Rolling
The first left and right handers are taken flat out, and I try to stay to the right for the left hander at the bottom of the hill. I lift as I turn-in, and try to maintain the mid 110s upon entering the uphill turn. I get back to full throttle after passing the inside curb, and make my way to the right for the entry to the tunnel. When the red/white portion of the curbing on the right goes out of view, I begin braking from 118 to 78, and flutter the gas as I aim for the inside curb.
T1: 0'19.775
I'm a bit too far to the right as I exit the tunnel, and trying to get to the left over the bumpy portion of the track unsettles the car. When the car reaches the outside curb, I brake from 86 to 56, and jump back on the gas to push through the right hander. When I pass under the shadow of the Monkey Tree, I begin braking for the right hander that leads to the 2nd tunnel, slowing from 103 to 78, and get back on the gas. I nearly go into the left side rock wall, so I lift and aim for the right side of the tunnel entry. Just as I enter the tunnel, I swing the steering back to the left and brake from 93 to 74, then flutter the throttle to make sure I'm tight to the left on the exit.
T2: 0'41.282
Just as I'm about to come out of the shadows of the canopy trees, I brake from 153 to 60, and get back on the gas for the rest of the turn. As I approach the left wall just before the hard right hander, I begin braking from 116 to 63, and get back on the gas. I completely miss the inside curb, but manage to keep from going too wide on the exit.
T2: 1'09.948
I brake for the left hander just before I reach the bottom of the hill, taking speeds from 111 to 63, and ease back into the gas as I round the inside curb. I keep my exit toward the right side, to prepare for the final turns. Shortly after passing the overhead bridge, I begin turn-in and brake slightly after my angle is good. I try to maintain the mid 110s through it, getting back to full throttle as I'm about to roll over the right side curbing. I try to keep the steering steady to avoid hitting the left side wall before I cross the line.

The S2 License Test from GT3 was one of my favorites. I was happy to see it's return to GT4, but going clockwise meant that I had a lot of re-learning to do. I ended up using 1st gear a lot more than I usually do, but the gearing on this car makes it practical for use when pushing through turns. The brakes aren't that great, so early braking for the approach into turns is something I try to do.

This is one of my worst gold runs for this test. I'll revisit it to try to break into 1'30.xxx, but it'll be a while before I do that...

S: Rolling
I begin braking for the hairpin as I pass the crosswalk lines painted on the ground (just before the 100 m marker). I brake from 145 to 45, and flutter the throttle as I come around the corner. I'm too tight for the second part of the turn, and my exit angle stinks. After making my way back to the right side, I brake slightly from 85 to 73, and get back on the gas as I pass the inside curb of Turn 3. After reaching the third flat part of James St., I begin braking for Turn 5, taking speeds from 120 to 52, then I get back on the gas and push through the corner in 1st gear.
T1: 0'30.544
Just as I pass under the bridge, I begin braking for Turn 7. I brake from 115 to 55, then get back on the gas just before I roll over the inside curb. I'm on the left side curb when I begin turn-in and braking for Turn 8, and this breaks my back end loose. I barely miss the right side barrier, and try to make my way back to the right side after the double-left of Turn 9 after giving a little stab of the brakes. I begin braking for Turn 10 as the yellow/black paint on the right side starts to go off screen, and I slow from 92 to 50, then ease back into the gas as I roll over the inside curb. Near the bottom of the hill on 4th St., I begin braking just before I go under the 100 m marker. I slow from 154 to 62, and get back on the gas as I pass the right side curb. There's a railroad gate along the right side of the track, and I begin braking for the entry into Turn 13 as it goes off screen. I slow down from 72 to 57, and flutter the throttle as I go through the right-left portion just before T2.
T2: 1'12.865
I lift slightly just as I roll over the right side curb for the exit from Turn 13, and head to the left side of the track. I begin braking just before the rumblestrip appears on the left side, taking speeds from 105 to 47, and push through Turn 14 in 1st gear. My turn-in for the chicane stinks badly, and I have to double-brake to avoid going into the right side wall. I limp through, and head for the line from there.

Another fun course/car combo! While there are pleny of places for me to improve my time, it'll be a while before I get around to it.

S: Launch @ 4600
Even though TCS is off, launching near full throttle won't cause a lot of wheel spin. I begin braking for Turn 1 as I pass the 3rd to last lamp post, taking speeds from 116 to 35. This was too late of a braking point, and I'm very deep into the corner as I bring the car around. I bump the left side wall with my back end, and push through the rest of the turn. Braking for Turn 2 begins as I roll over a tree's shadow on the ground, slowing from 92 to 40 before I ease back into the gas in the low 30s. Braking for Turn 3 begins just after I pass the last of the shadows that cross the track. I slow from 91 to 36, then get back to full throttle as I come around.
T1: 0'43.732
I brake twice while heading into Turn 4, the first time just before rolling over the crest of the hill (when the shadow from the tall wall ends), and then again as I enter the corner. Speeds go from 92 to 70, then I coast, then from 67 to 33 as I flutter the throttle to complete the turn. As the wall on the right changes from dark to light, I brake for the looping right hander of Turn 5, taking speeds from 72 to 45, then I try to get back to full throttle. I steer too hard to the right, and I nudge the inside wall just before making my exit.
T2: 1'09.652
I brake slightly as I cross T2, to help settle the car through the next few turns. I maintain the low 90s through the first left hander, then I brake again to take the right hander in the mid 70s. As the shadow from the mountain lightens up, I brake for the looping right hander of Turn 6, taking speeds from 105 to 49. A little too late, as I bump the left side wall. I choose to stay at full throttle for the turn, having already ruined any "clean lap" possibilities, and I hit the left side wall again before I head downhill. I begin braking for the sharp left of Turn 7 as I pass the last of the big tree shadows, taking speeds from 126 to 80 before coasting to the bottom of the hill. At that point, my car's disposition is way off, and I'm headed to the right side. I brake again from 68 to 40, as I swing the steering to the left, and the back end steps out as I push through the rest of the turn. I brake for the entry into the right-left, taking speeds from 83 to 64, then get back to full throttle just before crossing T3.
T3: 1'44.645
I begin braking for Turn 8 as the I enter the shadow of the building on the right, taking speeds from 100 to 40, then I flutter the throttle to complete the right hander. I brake for Turn 9 as I pass the storefront with the yellow awning, slowing from 76 to 20, then I ease back into the gas in 1st gear to finish the turn. As the red MOTUL banner goes off screen to the left, I brake for the final turn, taking speeds from 49 to 20. I'm wide for the exit and push through the rest of the turn before heading for the line.

This car took a while for me to get comfortable with. Most of my failed attempts were the result of me looking for the correct entry into the tunnel, and I still haven't found the right speed to hold through it. The gearing seems awkward to me, and I'm still not sure how much redline should be used before upshifting (if any at all). Lastly, the brakes and/or tires aren't as effective at scrubbing speed than one might expect for a high-performance street car like the S7. But, in any case, I'll have to revisit this one to try to break 1'23.000...

S: Rolling
I lift briefly to help the car steer to the right when I enter the tunnel, and as I understeer toward the left side wall, I begin braking from 150 down to 75. I ease back into the gas, and start to flutter the throttle when I get back to the low 90s. I'm a bit too far to the right when I exit the tunnel, and I brake from 110 to 88 as I enter Turn 2. I get back to full throttle as I roll over the right side curb, and try to stay to the right for the entry into Turn 3. I begin braking after passing the 50 m marker (the second blue/yellow sign on the right), taking speeds down from 102 to 45, then I jump back on the gas to push through the rest of the turn. I brake slightly after passing the 25 m marker that preceeds Turn 5, going from 111 to 97 before I get back to full throttle. I'm wide to the left as I exit Turn 6, and I bump the outside wall significantly. No penalty, and I move on...
T1: 0'33.347
I begin braking for Turn 7 just as I pass the 25 m marker, slowing from 122 to 75, but my entry angle and speed stinks and I'm a bit too far to the left than I usually prefer. I keep the exit to the right, to help set up for the sharp left hairpin. Braking for Turn 9 begins just before the 50 m marker, before the track levels out. I brake from 115 to the mid 40s, and coast through half of the turn before getting back to full throttle. I take Turn 10 flat-out, and give the brakes a stab near the 25 m marker before Turn 11. I have trouble getting a good angle over the inside curb, and I have to flutter the gas to make sure I don't go into the outside wall on the exit.
T2: 0'57.286
I begin braking for Turn 12 as I pass under the traffic lights (near the 100 m marker). I brake from 127 to 89, then ease back into it as I start to see daylight through the chicane. As I pass the left side wall, I begin braking for the right hander, going from 103 to 48. My braking was apparently way too late, as I'm still slowing down as I pass the right side curbing, and I end up wide to the left when I finally get back on the gas. When the beginning of the red/white wall on the left is just about to go off screen, I begin turn-in for the final right, lifting off the gas to make sure I don't exit too wide. As this portion of the wall goes back to concrete, I get back to full throttle and head for the line from there...

I like this course a lot, but its name doesn't "sit well" with me. It reminds me too much of Indigestion... Beavis and Butthead would be having a field day with this one. This track can make one sick if they make too many "runs". Some people think it's gross, but it's really great on toast... Di Aria, cha-cha-cha... Ok... That was enough. I'll stop now.

S: Launch @ 5300
With TCS off, I try to take it easy for the launch to reduce wheel spin. While this car doesn't have a whole lot of power, the weight makes traction a challenge for the start. I'm flat-out through the right hander at the top of the hill, and I start braking for the chicane when the yellow banner on the right wall goes off-screen. I slow down from 71 to 43, then ease back into the gas as I approach the left side curb. I brake as I approach the right hander at the bottom of the hill, taking speeds from 74 to 60. I coast further into the turn, then brake again into the sharp right. I slow down all the way to the low 20s before I get back to full throttle.
T1: 0'57.998
This next section runs similarly to the IB9 License Test. I begin braking at the top of the hill, just as I pass the end of the banners on the right. I brake from 91 to 68, then lightly brake again down to 52 as I approach the left hand turn. I ease back into the gas and try to stay to the right for the approach into the left-right, and I slightly nudge the right side wall. After doing so, I brake from 61 to 23, then get back on the gas as I pass the left side curb. I lift as I swing the steering to the right, then get back on the gas as the road starts going downhill.
T2: 1'33.614
As I enter the IB16 section, I begin braking too late, and it forces me to take a bad angle as I pass under the arch. I'm too far to the left, and things would've been more manageable if I would've used the brakes again, but I try to coast past the barrier on the left. I have to steer to the right to avoid hitting the corner of the barrier, and it sends me wide to the right. I smack the cobblestone wall on the right quite hard, but I miraculously avoid the penalty. I regain control after bouncing off of it, and flutter the throttle as I push through the sharp right hander. I'm flat-out through the narrow streets until I approach the steep uphill left turn (just past the yellow truck on the right). I brake from 70 to 51, then I get back to full throttle for the final stretch.

I really like this track and car combo. While the CIVIC doesn't have much straight line speed, it's a very well balanced car that doesn't understeer as much as most other Front-Wheel-Drivers. I'll eventually revisit this test to try to break into the 2'14.xxx range, as many of the corners I took seemed slow...

S: Rolling
I still haven't found the correct turn-in and braking points for the first two right handers. I begin turn-in after passing what looks to be the 50 m marker, and begin braking shortly after pointing to the inside of Turn 1. I take speed down from 105 to 64, coast through the middle to regain grip, then get back on the gas near 46 mph when I'm pointed toward the inside of Turn 2. These turns could be taken at higher speeds, but I haven't dialed it in yet. I begin braking and turn-in for Turn 3 when the track splits to the right, taking speeds from 110 to 54, getting back on the gas after coasting over the inside curb. This puts me on the right as I approach the entry to Turn 4, and I take that corner flat-out.
T1: 0'39.274
I make my way to the left side of the track for the approach into Turn 5. I begin braking and turn-in just after passing the 50 m marker, slowing from 112 to 42, then I get back on the gas to complete the turn. Upon exiting 130R, I scoot back to the right side to prepare for the S Curve turns. I begin turn-in for the S Curve at the 50 m marker, then brake from 104 to 74. I coast over the left side curbing, then get back on the gas near 66 mph. I swing the steering to the right and lift, easing back into the gas as I roll over the right side curb near 67 mph.
T2: 1'12.124
I move back to the right side, and begin braking and turn-in for the V Curve as the building on the right starts to go off-screen. I take the speed down from 89 to 49, coast over the the inside curb, then get back on the gas near 42 mph. I gradually make my way to the left side, and prepare for the Hairpin. I begin turn-in near the 50 m marker, but only slightly. As the bulding on the left begins to go off-screen, I crank the steering and begin braking from 93 to 43 mph. I get back on the gas midway through, but I'm a little too deep for my liking.
T3: 1'40.780
I begin braking for 90 Degree as I pass the 50 m marker, taking speed down from 121 to 50, and get back on the gas as I roll over the right side curb. For the double-left, I begin turn-in from the middle of the track, and steer steadily to the left. I lift as I approach the left side curb for the entry to Victory Corner, and swing the steering back to the right as I understeer toward the right side curb. I brake from 82 to 41, then get back on the gas as I pass the end of the rumblestrip.

Day 121 (31 JUL, YEAR 1): Used Car Purchase

You have purchased a used Renault Megane 2.0 IDE Coupe '00.
Paint Color: Jaune Tournesol

This is the lowest mileage (non-6.2) Megane in the lots. I'm not too fond of the color, but whatever. The car costs $19950, has 12541.2 miles, and is found in the Used Car II lot. The next lowest mileage (non-6.2) one has more than 14000 miles. The only 6.2 mile Megane appears during Week 75.

So now, I'll be running through the S License Tests, taking a "break" after S11 so that I can buy 2 more Used Cars (the Camaro and the ALTO WORKS SUZUKI Ltd)... Here's what my Game Status screen looks like after this car has been delivered:

Another Mission at Infineon, this time with the C5R. This was an exciting run, being such a close finish! Not a bad way to finish the last of my Driving Missions (although, this is not my best run)...

S: + 0'44.000
T1: + 0'31.086
The Z06 comes into sight as I'm coming out of Turn 6, and I pass it while braking into the hairpin of Turn 7. The GRAND SPORT is making its exit from this corner as I'm midway through, and I pass after exiting, just before T2.
T2: + 0'14.287
I pass the Stingray on the outside of Turn 9, and pass the Coupe while braking into the final hairpin (Turn 11). As I exit, I can see the Convertible entering Turn 12, and I eventually pass it for the lead, just before the finish line.
F: - 0'00.278

Another circuit with no checkpoints... The chicane at Turn 8 can be cut, but I elected to take it normally for this run.

S: + 0'37.000
I finally pass an opponent on the inside, the ST205, as I brake for Turn 8. Coming out of the chicane, I pass the RC on the right. I pass the 2000GT-FOUR on the inside of Turn 11. My exit was too wide, and I have to use the paved runoff zone to keep from losing it As I approach the top of the hill, I pass the XX on the inside, and prepare for the final straight. But as I exit the turn, I go wide to the left, and I'm briefly off-track. I regain control, fall into the leader's draft, then pass while heading down the straight.

This Mission isn't too bad. Not too bad of a wait, a nice car, and a nice track...

S: + 0'50.000
T1: + 0'33.530
I'm on the AMEMYA's tail as I approach T2, and pass it on the inside through Turn 6.
T2: + 0'21.741
I pass the Type RS coming out of the Corkscrew. My turn-in for Rainey is way too thin and too fast, and I go off to the right just after passing T3.
T3: + 0'10.810
I manage to get back on track, and I come up on the RX-8 and GT-X while braking for Turn 11. I end up bumping the RX-8, but I avoid any penalty. I head for the line, and pass the 110S about 100 m from the finish.

I really like the engine note on the TAKATA DOME NSX, and the balance of this car makes it a pleasant drive. Too bad there's a 1 1/2 minute wait to start driving it...

S: + 1'30.000
I'm a little too far to the outside as I approach the second right of Degner, and when I turn in, the back end steps out badly. I manage to keep it in control, but it makes the turn seem a lot slower than normal.
T1: + 0'51.865
I finally catch up to someone, and take 5th from the S2000 heading out of 200R. I pass the INTEGRA just as we begin our ascent up the hill that leads to T2.
T2: + 0'15.628
I pass the CIVIC just after crossing T2. Coming out of Casio and into the final right hander, I pass the BEAT. The S500 is in sight, and I take the lead just before going under the "Suzuka Circuit" banner.

Unlike the other configurations for Fuji, there aren't many places for lawnmowing. This Mission must be cleared cleanly... There isn't much to this Mission, other than keeping the entry onto the final straight as smooth as possible to maintain a good speed. Other than that, I just try to be careful when passing. Penalty = Fail...

S: + 0'35.000
T1: + 0'22.801
I don't even have an opponent in sight until the left turn just before T2.
T2: + 0'15.199
All opponents are passed between T2 and F... I pass the first two opponents on the left side, which helps keep an ouside approach into the final right hander onto the straight. I pass the 300ZX (Z31) on the right, to maintain a line on the inside for the turn. The last 2 opponents are passed within the final 5 seconds or so...

It took a couple of attempts to figure out the best way to pass this Mission. One time, I managed to do so by bump-drafting one of the "pack" SKYLINEs for 2.5 laps. But the best way to do this is to periodically allow the opponents to pass and provide as much of a draft for them when leading (I felt it necessary to move away from them as they pass, since they're idiots). This will allow the opponents to travel faster than they normally might. Another thing to mention is that It's usually better to avoid being too close behind the "pack" leader when heading into turns. They flash their brakes going in.

S: + ???
There are around 2 seconds on the clock when this Mission begins, and the leader is near the 1000 m marker, WAAAY ahead of the pack.
L1 T1: + ???
There is no gap posted when crossing the 400 m checkpoint. I believe this is because the lead car starts this Mission ahead of that point, which means there's no time against which one can compare...
L1 T2: + 0'13.751
L1 T3: + 0'08.471
I do some lifting, to allow for the opponents to catch up to me sooner, giving me more time to draft them before heading into the 2nd turn...
L1 T4: + 0'08.187
L1 F: + 0'06.491
L2 T1: + 0'06.560
L2 T2: + 0'06.623
I give about 2 tenths back, while slowing down to allow the opponents to catch up.
L2 T3: + 0'04.842
L2 T4: + 0'04.641
L2 F: + 0'03.111
L3 T1: + 0'03.124
L3 T2: + 0'03.182
L3 T3: + 0'01.609
L3 T4: + 0'01.300
It's really important to make sure that one of the opponents gets ahead early along the back straight for the final lap. Slingshotting the entry will allow for getting into the leader's draft sooner, but I do so much slower than usual (less than 170 mph). Fortunately, I'm close enough where I can still catch the leader's draft with plenty of room to spare. I finally take the lead about midway through the final turn.

I haven't driven this car enough to be able to determine how necessary a shift into 5th gear is. The car slows considerably in 5th without a draft, and it seems best to be in 4th gear if the car is going slower than 135 mph.

S: + ???

These Missions are relatively easy, as long as you have someone in front of you. Some things worth mentioning... I tried to wait until I'm in someone's draft to switch into 4th gear. It helps prevent the car from slowing down too much when shifting. While coming through the turns, I try to line my left wheels with the right-side wheels of whichever car I'm trying to draft. How far this windbreak is toward the outside depends on the distance between us.

S: + ???
There are around 7 seconds on the clock when this Mission begins, and the leader is near the 400 m marker.
T1: + 0'11.549
T2: + 0'10.091
It takes me forever to finally get into the 5th place car's draft. We're almost into the straight by the time that happens. I finally pass it just as I cross T3.
T3: + 0'07.599
I pass the 4th place car along the back straight.
T4: + 0'04.660
I pass the 3rd place car just as we enter the final curve. I pass the 2nd place car as we're about 1/3 through the turn. I gain the lead about 2/3 through the turn, and keep myself to the outside (toward the right) to make sure no one will draft me.

While at a disadvantage power-wise, the Tires on the mm-R allow for later braking and higher speeds through turns...

S: + ???
There are around 11 seconds on the clock when this Mission begins, and the leader is just about to enter the first corner. I pass the SKYLINE on the insde of Turn 1, but my angle is bad and my exit is wide. I might've been able to pass the Lancer as well, but my exit stinks.

I pass the Lancer on the inside while braking for Turn 3. I pass the IMPREZA as we come through Turn 4.

Please note that for some Races/Missions, the opponents will sometimes (not always) slow down considerably when the leader crosses the line. This happens here, so the actual gap is likely to be smaller.

I cross the line at 3'36.983, going 88 mph in 4th gear.

This car is hard to handle, but hopefully I'll get more familiar with it at some other time. As with the previous Mission, I have no problem violating the rules of "clean" or "sportsman-like" driving. Just win, baby...

This course doesn't have any Timing Checkpoints. There are at least 3 others are like this (Motorland, Beginner Course, Fuji 2005)...

S: + ???
There are around 9.5 seconds on the clock when this Mission begins, and the leader is about 2/3 along the straight. My exit from the first right handers is wide, and I nearly go off to the left. As I take the second part of the final right hander, I pass the Gold S2000. I use too much gas and the car starts to go wide before I round the corner. I pull through very slowly to complete the turn, and I drop back into 6th.
L1 F: + 0'06.561
One lap completed, and I'm still in 6th???!!?? Ok then... time for The Kitchen Sink. I bash into "Goldie" and use it as my brake into the first right handers. I get penalized, but I figure I'd be slowing down for this curve anyway, right? Goldie goes off into the dirt, and I do too, but not as deeply. I bring the car around and point it straight across the grass. I pass the Red S2000 midway through Gyaku, then I get into the dirt, and Red regains 4th. I finally pass Red for good on the inside as I enter the final right handers.
L2 F: + 0'03.472
I'm in the Black S2000's draft as we begin the final lap, and I pass it to the inside while he brakes into the first corners. I get right behind the White S2000, bump it, then take the inside away of the second part of this turn. I head for the grass and come up behind the Green S2000 as it enters the right hander. I take the the inside as we approach Gyaku, and hold the lead from there. Being such an incredibly sloppy run (not to mention... illegitimate), I try to cross the line backwards...
F: - 0'02.314

I cross the line at 3'22.617, around 40 mph as the gears switch from 4th to Reverse.

Before I explain this run, I need to reiterate that my goal is not to drive realistically. My goal is to finish in first place. I don't care if I have to cut across chicanes... I'll do it. I don't care if I have to punt opponents into the junk... I'll do it. For the most part, I prefer to drive cleanly, but when I'm in my "Any Means Necessary" mode, I'll do anything for the Checkered Flag. No-nonsense driving = nonsensical driving...

This Mission, and all others, can be cleared cleanly. But since I don't like wasting time, I prefer to take advantage of every opportunity to help ensure that I win. Through my experiences, I've found that the best places for chicane cutting are through the Dunlop Curves and the Ford Chicane (the turns just after, and just before the S/F line)... I do this for each of the 3 laps. Other than that, this Mission will be driven similarly to the S15 License Test.

And lastly, this car is a great drive, especially with the default settings. Driving this beast with Aids @ 0,0,0 makes it very tough to launch and/or pull out of corners with a DualShock2.

S: + ???
There are around 12.5 seconds on the clock when this Mission begins, and the leader is making its way through Tetre Rouge. I'm all kinds of sloppy as I cut the first of the Dunlop curves, and this gets my rhythm completely off, even after making it back on track.

L1 T2: + 0'31.901
L1 T3: + 0'30.261
L1 T4: + 0'29.235
I come up on the Panoz at the end of the long straight, and pass it just as I'm crossing T4.
L1 T5: + 0'28.386
L1 T6: + 0'27.696
I pass the AMG as I cut across the latter portion of the Ford Chicane. Since it was making it's entry into the last right hander, I had to pass it on the right. This forces me to travel through more of the "sand trap" than I usually like, slowing me considerably.
L1 F: + 0'21.619
L2 T1: + 0'17.533
L2 T2: + 0'15.296
L2 T3: + 0'13.648
I come into the draft of the Speed 8 as I approach Mulsanne, and I brake too late for the turn. I nearly ram into it, but I jink to the left to avoid the penalty. This puts me VERY wide and VERY slow through the corner, and the Speed 8 pulls away.
L2 T4: + 0'13.440
I pass the Bentley along the straight, but as I brake for the right hand kink that leads to Indy, I get into the dirt on the left side, and I fall back into 4th place.
L2 T5: + 0'13.555
I try to pass again on the inside of Arnage, but I come in too hot and nearly smack into the wall. The Bentley passes me again, and I finally pass it for good about 6 seconds later.
L2 T6: + 0'13.371
My right side edges the grass as I come out of Maison Blanche, and this makes my back end step out. I "semi-drift" the entry to the left hander, and cross T6 much slower than usual. I see the GT-ONE as I approach the Ford Chicane, and I try to be careful not to run into it (or have it run into me) as I cut across the final right hander.
L2 F: + 0'08.453
L3 T1: + 0'04.250
If you keep your eye on the Position indicator in the upper left (around 6'56.000, race time), you'll see it flip from 2 to 3 back to 2. You'll also notice the "Wrong Way" indicator flash for a moment. I have no idea why this happens, but it has also happened during a race. If I find a good explanation for this, I'll give a heads up...
L3 T2: + 0'01.991
I'm into the Sauber's draft just before T3.
L3 T3: + 0'00.272
As I'm about to pass the C 9 on the outside, it widens its turn through the kink. I try to dive back toward the right, but I'm too close and I bump it from behind. Fortunately, no penalty is issued, and I pass it a few seconds later.
L3 T4: - 0'00.974
L3 T5: - 0'02.607
I brake way too late for Arnage, and I smack into the wall. PENALTY! I use the rear-view mirror to line up in the C 9's path, and I get a bump-start from it just as the penalty is lifted. It's nice to see that the Stewards issue penalties to all vehicles objectively (sarcasm). As I pull away, I try to stay off of the C 9's line, so that it won't be able to get as much of a draft... at least for a short while.
L3 T6: - 0'00.748
F: - 0'07.731
Please note that for some Races/Missions, the opponents will sometimes (not always) slow down considerably when the leader crosses the line. This happens here, so the actual gap is likely to be smaller.

I cross the line at 9'09.065, going 129 mph in 3rd gear.
