Day 34 (5 MAY, YEAR 1): License A 15

A full lap test in the Mazda6. This track offers some nice combo-turns, and trying to catch the draft of the Pace Car will be key for the exits into the long straights.

I launch just under 4000, then nudge over to the right and try to follow the Pace Car. The first left and right are taken without problem, but I end up a little too close to the inside of the big left hander at the bottom of the hill. It puts me a little wide on the exit, and I lose some speed.

I settle the car back down and begin the turn-in for the first tunnel by following the Pace Car. I brake as I go into the shadow of the mountain, from 79 to 50. I get back on the gas as I begin to roll over the inside curb.

I cross T1 at 0'32.184, and I try to stay to the left to set up for the coming right hander. I begin braking as the left side curbing veers to the left, slowing from 69 to 45, but my turn in is way too sharp. I correct back to the left, then pull the wheel to the right again for the exit.

I stay to the left after exiting, then follow the Pace Car into the right hander past the Monkey Tree. I lightly dab the brakes to go from 73 to 59, staying in 3rd gear. I get back on the gas a little late, and head back to the right side of the second tunnel.

As I'm about to run into the wall, I lift and swing the steering wheel to the left. When the car settles, I get back on the gas and exit the first tunnel tight to the left. I flutter the gas, maintaining the mid 60s, then go back to flat-out as the entry to the long tunnel appears.

As smoothly as I can, I straighten out along the right side wall, and try my best to follow the Pace Car's draft. I cross T2 at 0'59.832, and don't let off until the end of the long straight.

I begin braking when I come out of the shadow of the canopy trees. I slow from 115 to 59, then coast down to 52 before getting back on the gas. I try to steer steadily to the left to complete the turn and prepare for the next few turns.

I start braking for the big right hander (just before T3) as I come into the shadow of the mountain. I brake from 81 to 55, then coast while aiming for the inside curb. I miss, but I manage to exit OK. I cross T3 at 1'37.276.

I make my way to the right hand side, then begin braking for the sharp left at the bottom of the hill (as the "Mobil" signs to the right go off-screen). Turn-in begins near the same time, and I get back on the gas after slowing from 86 to 47. I try to keep a steady line back to the outside, and get back into the Pace Car's draft. I shift into 4th and turn in for the final left (left-right), but I ease into it to make sure I can get a good angle. I stab the brakes to settle down to 89 mph, then I jump back on the gas to attack the final right hander.

The Pace Car stays tight to the right, away from the left side wall, so I try to follow a similar line to take advantage of its draft. I end up crossing the line at 2'03.801, going 100 mph in 4th gear.
